Welcome Summer Flip-Flop

The all time favorite summer shoe …. the FLIP-FLOP!!!  Want a totally cute way to welcome Summer as well as all your friends and family when they come to visit?

Here’s what you’ll need along with twenty minutes and six bucks:

  • 6 pair of flip-flops – I bought mine at Walmart for 97c each in kids size 11-12
  • E6000 glue – I used this because hot glue would melt the flip-flop foam
  • White acrylic paint
  • Black sharpie
  • A piece of cardboard – 3″ wide by the length of the lined up flip-flops less 2″
  • Your choice of 24″ ribbon, string, twine, etc

Here’s how to put it all together:

  1. Separate the flip-flops into two piles (left shoes and right shoes is how I did it)
  2. Line them up side by side in staggering the direction the toe is facing (see picture below for example).  I let my three-year old choose the color order … she was so thrilled!!
  3. Glue the flip-flops together two at a time (right two, middle two and left two).  Be sure to follow the adhesive directions by waiting a minute or two between application of the glue and bonding the flip-flops together.
  4. Let the three sets sit for about two minutes (this is where I break to check in with my daughter, who was hovering over my shoulder the past few minutes).
  5. After no more than two minutes, I glues the three groups into one long group following the same adhesive process as before.
  6. Next, I mounted the back flip-flops to a piece of cardboard (to keep the  flip-flops from buckling once finished) and returned the project to face up.
  7. As the adhesive is drying, I used acrylic paint to write out “summer” adding one letter to each flip-flop.  On mine, I also painted a super simple beach ball and two little seagulls.  My daughter …. still hovering over my shoulder … chose the second color of the beach ball.
  8. Potty Break !!!  Because hovering apparently requires three-year olds to need the bathroom.
  9. After the two-minute potty break, grab your black sharpie and trace around each letter (and any other little paintings) to add definition to your letters.
  10. Finally, tie your ribbon/twine/etc around the flip-flops.  I tied a single knot around the back peg closest to each end in order to keep the know more hidden.

Including the time it took for my indecisive three-year old to choose the color order of the flip-flops, the second color for the added beach ball AND a potty break; this easy DIY craft took me less than twenty minutes.  Twenty minutes to make two super-cute welcome summer door hangers that my daughter felt she was a big helper with.  One is for our home and the other I am gifting to my friend obsessed with flip-flops.  Total cost for the flip-flops:  $5.82 since I only used supplies I had in my “Power of One” tote.

  • Less than twenty minutes
  • $5.82
  • Two super cute Summer door signs
  • Three-year old felt a part of the process
  • Personalized, custom gift

Don’t forget to write a personal message and date on the back when gifting!!  It makes it that much more special, especially when my daughter adds her name to the note.  Friends and family love it!!  I plan to make at least two more for hostess thank you gifts.

Welcome all your friends and family with this super-cute front door sign.

WELCOME SUMMER!!!

The Power of ONE

So if you are just beginning, listed below is step one in your DIY future!

Only dream of a crafting/DIY area in your home like I do?  Your child(ren) taking up all available space?  Well first things first, go out and buy one clear tote (something that can still be picked up once filled).  Sticker it, label it, mark it however you want because this is your personal go-to place for all things DIY!

Some inexpensive essentials to buy when you are starting your DIY tote:

  • One bottle of ModPodge -matte finish (at least 16oz)
  • One Assorted Brush Pack – 40pc Craftsmart set was under $10 at Michael’s and it includes foam brushes
  • One package of Sharpie Multi Colored Fine Point Markers
  • One additional Sharpie Black Fine Point (I blow through black sharpies)
  • One Acrylic 12 pc assort color pack – my Craftsmart value pack isn’t the best quality, but it does the job and didn’t break the bank.
  • One pair of decent scissors
  • One tube of E6000 industrial strength adhesive (Walmart and Michael’s carries it)
  • One piece of sand paper, medium grain

Feel free to hit up the Dollar Tree (or the equivalent of) to get a one container for your sharpies and one for your brushes.  I chose to use mason jars but a pencil box container will do the trick too.

Now that you put some basics together, you also have one place to keep all the future items you add to your DIY collection.

You are now on the way to creating great DIY projects for your home and to give as gifts.
